Abstract

Objectives: This case study explored the client¡¯s interpersonal conflict and the family characteristics affecting it. It also examined the family therapy interventions used and the changes in the family that resulted from the counseling.
Methods: Constant comparative analysis and open coding were used to analyze the data.
Results: The study revealed that the client¡¯s interpersonal conflict was related to her family members, peer group, and teachers. Family-related influences included negative feelings among family members, dysfunctional communication patterns, the parents¡¯ family-of-origin communication patterns and experiences, and the parents¡¯ negative rearing practices. Effective therapeutic interventions included formation of a therapeutic alliance, reflection on repeated dysfunctional communication patterns, the guidance of communication skills, the demand for change in the parents¡¯ rearing attitudes, the sharing of similar cases, and the therapist¡¯s self-disclosure.
Conclusions: As a result of therapist¡¯s interventions, the family adopted new, functional communication methods and changed their relationships with each other.
